Wairoa River Trip - This Sunday 23rd January 2010 Help raise the profile of the plight of our river Sunday is the day to show your support for the river.
Tell Clevedon and NZ that we care about fresh water, and we can see what is going on.
Meet others interested in river issues.
Enjoy a paddle downstream.
08:00am Keen power kayakers & rock hoppers leave from Hunua Falls, attempting to meet main group at 11:30am
10:53am High tide
11:00am Meet at the Clevedon Wharf Reserve, next to the Fire Station. Plenty of room for parking, ramp to launch kayaks, wharf & steps. 11:00-11:30 Media, photos, introductions 12:00-3:30ish Paddle to Duders Beach - River in full flow will make for a faster trip. 3:30ish-4:30ish BYO Picnic, bbq sausage sizzle at Duders Regional Park. 5:30ish Ferry people back to their cars - we will provide a shuttle van & kayak trailer.
There will be participants from local kayak clubs, river care & community groups. Everyone welcome. Bring your kayak, dinghy, canoe, paddle boat, river punt, coracle or wave ski, and your life jacket of course.
Non-boating supporters most welcome. Wave us off from the wharf, take photos from vantage points along the way, squirt water guns, flash signs at passing traffic, help in the pull out and clean up, revive exhausted paddlers ;-) , enjoy the bbq.
Bring a (video) camera to record what you see. Post what you find to facebook, youtube, blogs. Twitter from the river if you're able.
Hopefully we can highlight good things like riverside fencing & planting, clean tributaries from the hill side, as well as the bad things such as cattle grazing & pooing in unprotected river banks, abandoned equipment, dairy shed outfalls.
Explore the tributaries like the Taitaia, in worse condition than the Wairoa. Spot the koi carp.
More participants means more action from council and more pressure on riverside landowners.
